FEED AND YOLK COLOR: 7 COMMON PIGMENTATION PROBLEMS.
DOES THE COLOR OF THE YOLK AFFECT THE NUTRITIONAL COMPONENT OF THE EGG?
This is one of the questions that most afflicts the families consuming the protein. The answer, however, is a resounding “NO”; since the producer, by using natural raw materials or additives in the balanced feed/concentrate, can refine or strengthen the color of the yolk.
Studies reveal that the ideal yolk color does not exist. Some people opt for a more yellow color and others for a paler one. An example of this are Asians, who have a preference for orange yolk.
7 COMMON PROBLEMS IN EGG YOLK PIGMENTATION:
1 Disintegration of Pigment in Feed: To avoid this situation, it is recommended to store both additives and premixes in airtight containers in a cool place away from sunlight.
2 Food Mixing: The mixing process is fundamental. It is always suggested to pre-mix the pigments before adding them to the feed in the mixer.
3 Lack of Carotenoids in the Balanced Feed: It is necessary to review the sources of carotenoids used to produce concentrated feed. Although natural sources have their advantages, the concentration of carotenoids in these sources often varies greatly, so if consistency in yolk pigmentation is required, it is preferable to use added pigments.
4 Insufficient pigment reserve: Laying birds, when they start the laying process, often do not have enough pigment reserves. That is why it is necessary to strengthen their pigment reserve with the adequate feed 2 or 3 weeks before they start the laying process.
5 Substances with a negative effect: Some substances commonly used in feedstuffs can nullify the effect of pigments, such as barley and triticale. In these cases, it is necessary to add larger amounts of pigment to the mixture to ensure yolk pigmentation.
6 Unfavorable storage conditions: It is known that if the food is stored in conditions of excessive heat or humidity, the effectiveness of the pigment is considerably reduced. Storage in cool and dry conditions is essential.
7 Improper handling and transport of feed: Special care must be taken in handling and conveying the feed to avoid separation of components, such as pigment additives. If your plant has screw conveyors for handling the finished feed, you must take strict precautions with the speed and pitch of the screw to avoid damage to the feed.
The egg has multiple nutritional benefits: This protein contains nutrients such as choline that supports brain health and development, heart, liver health, sports performance, among many other benefits.
